Tackling environmental threats on Pacific atolls

چکیده
Pacific Economic Bulletin Volume 11 Number 2 1996 © Asia Pacific Press Increasing population density on the main islands of both Tuvalu and Kiribati is generating waste loadings that exceed the assimilative capacity of the natural systems. The resulting pollution is lowering the quality of life and causing ill health. The renewable resources of the atolls are being degraded and their ability to provide a continuous stream of future benefits is in jeopardy. Development proposals pose additional environmental threats. This article (based on fieldwork conducted in Kiribati and Tuvalu in September 1995) examines the management of natural resources on these two Pacific atolls, and some of the institutional and financial implications of addressing the consequential development imperatives.

Distant Storms as Drivers of Environmental Change at Pacific Atolls
The central Pacific Ocean with its many low lying islands and atolls is under threat from sea level rise and increased storm activity. Here, we illustrate how increasing frequency and severity of large scale storm events associated with global climate change may be particularly profound at the local scale for human populations that rely on lagoon systems for provision of a variety of goods and ...
متن کاملMass mortality events in atoll lagoons: environmental control and increased future vulnerability.
Coral reefs and lagoons worldwide are vulnerable environments. However, specific geomorphological reef types (fringing, barrier, atoll, bank for the main ones) can be vulnerable to specific disturbances that will not affect most other reefs. This has implications for local management and science priorities. Several geomorphologically closed atolls of the Pacific Ocean have experienced in recent...
متن کاملDifferences in fish-assemblage structure between fished and unfished atolls in the northern Line Islands, central Pacific
We describe the abundance, biomass, size composition, and trophic structure of fish assemblages of shallow (10 m depth) fore reef habitats at 2 US Pacific atolls (Kingman, Palmyra) and 2 Kiribati-owned atolls (Tabuaeran, Kiritimati) in the northern Line Islands. Our characterization spans several coincident gradients (in human habitation and exploitation, latitude, and nutrient upwelling) from ...
متن کاملInfluence of quaternary sea-level variations on a land bird endemic to Pacific atolls.
Little is known about the effect of quaternary climate variations on organisms that inhabited carbonate islands of the Pacific Ocean, although it has been suggested that one or several uplifted islands provided shelter for terrestrial birds when sea-level reached its highest. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the history of colonization of the Tuamotu reed-warbler (Acrocephalus atyphus) ...

The great Pacific groups of atolls are such archipelagoes as the Tuamotus, Carolines, Marshalls, Gilberts, the Phoenix-Ellice group, and those scattered clusters and individual islands collectively termed the Pacific Equatorial or Line Islands. The observations forming the basis of this paper were made on visits to all these groups, except the Phoenix-Ellice and Gilberts, as well as to the Aust...
